I Are a Machine Trust Me

Another odd convergence, I watched the first 20 or 30 minutes of ‘Knight Rider, the Movie’ last night* and began reading job applications and cover letters first thing this morning.  Deanna Russo doing shot-reverse-shot bits with the voice of Val Kilmer who plays the-voice-of-a-Shelby-Cobra-GT500KR seemed to find herself in the same double bind as the applicants trying to imagine the search committee who would read the CL’s & CV’s.

I understand that there’s a form for these things and apparently way too much advice on the web about how to write a killer resume, but if you describe any of your skills as ‘world-class’ you’re missing my particular boat.  The thing is that after reading through 20 applicants the only thing that sticks out is the guy who said that his ‘current’ driver’s licence expires in April of 2004. Granted there were one or two whose listed qualifications and work experience suggested only that they hadn’t bothered to read the job description, but even they possessed ‘exceptional customer support skills’.  Here’s a hint for anyone leafing through the University Job Opps: What we’re looking for is someone with real passion for learning and at least a smattering of originality.

*It’s to be understood that if I bother to TIVO something like Knight Rider or The Sarah Connor Chronicles, guilty on both counts, I can be counted amongst the hopelessly addicted, and if I hit delete after the first third….
